Early in the season, the focus is on development and mat time, and less about wins and losses. Coaches use these events to see how their wrestlers respond to live competition, evaluate technique under pressure, and identify what needs improvement. That’s why you may see multiple wrestlers from the same team in the same bracket or even A, B, and C divisions at a single weight class. The goal is to get everyone meaningful matches, build confidence, and set the foundation for growth as the season progresses.
A NOTE: When we use the term “hammer” in these recaps, it isn’t limited to the most dominant wrestlers in the state. Yes, those elite athletes are certainly hammers — but we also use the term to highlight wrestlers who win tight matches, step up in big moments, outperform expectations, or make a meaningful impact for their team. You don’t have to win the weight class to earn it; sometimes overperforming your seed or coming through when it matters most is what makes you a hammer.
GIRLS
There were four major girls’ events across Georgia this past weekend that were recorded on Trackwrestling, and those are the ones we’ll focus on here—tracking down full results from non-posted events quickly becomes too time-consuming and inconsistent. Each week you can expect the same format: a brief team summary from each event highlighting the top five finishers, a clean list of individual champions, a spotlight on the top scorers who piled up bonus points for their teams, and a note on any standout or notable matches that jump off the page as we review the brackets.
Jefferson Girl’s Kickoff
Lumpkin County put together a dominant team performance, finishing well ahead of the field with 181.5 points behind four champions and six runners-up. Jefferson followed in second with three individual titles, while Cedartown took third on the strength of consistent scoring throughout the lineup. Mill Creek and Chestatee rounded out the top five, each producing champions and multiple placers to stay in the mix in a deep and competitive tournament.
Top Scorer: Three athletes stood at the top of the leaderboard with 26 team points, each delivering dominant, pin-heavy championship runs. Scarlett Ferrer (Chestatee) rolled to a 5-0 day with five pins, including three falls in under 25 seconds and a finals win over Lumpkin County’s Gaby Luper. Nora Garbuzovas (Lumpkin County) matched that efficiency with a 4-0 performance, pinning every opponent on her path to the title, highlighted by a controlled finals fall over Cambridge’s Maddie Turner. Ava Catledge (Jefferson) also went 5-0, recording five pins of her own and closing the tournament with a fast fall over Cindy Allison in the final round. All three were undeniably dominant.
