Senior Nationals at NHSCA’s are always fun to watch. We get a mix of wrestlers heading to D1 programs (just like the four champs from the SE with Paridon heading to Virginia, Uhorchuk to Tennessee-Chattanooga, Cody Kirk to Davidson, and Cason Howle to NC State) as well as others that are looking for a great tournament to show all of the college coaches what they missed.
For some Seniors this might be their last folkstyle tournament, for others it is just the beginning of the next step. Regardless, congrats to everyone that made a run for the podium … the SE had 30 make the podium (120 was the only weight missing a wrestler from the SE).
Jayce Paridon - NHSCA Champ at 138. Paridon of Lake Highland Prep (Florida) came in as the top seed and looked every bit the part on his way to the 138 lb. title. Paridon won his first five matches with ease before getting Alabama hammer Will Anderson in the semis. Paridon got an early takedown and then a reversal to start the 2nd to go up 5-0 before Anderson got an escape and a takedown to narrow the lead to 5-4. Paridon’s reversal at the end of the second would be the end of the scoring as he advanced. In the finals - Paridon drew Ohio’s Ryan Kennedy. Again an early takedown set the stage … he followed that up with an escape and Paridon led 4-0. Kennedy got a takedown and Paridon followed his an escape in the 2nd to win 5-3.
Ethan Uhorchuk - NHSCA Champ at 132. Uhorchuk came in the #2 seed and dominated his first four matches to make the semis opposite Luke Satriano of New York. Uhorchuk got a late takedown in the 1st period and then gave up an escape to start the 2nd in all the scoring … taking it 3-1 and booking his spot in the finals. Uhorchuk did all the scoring in the finals … earning an escape to start the 2nd period and a clutch 4 point nearfall at the end of the match to down California’s Leo Maestas for the title.
Cody Kirk - NHSCA Champ at 182. Kirk entered as the 6 seed - winning his first two matches with ease before mounting a comeback win (8-5) over Virginia’s Ethan Osburn in the Round of 16. A takedown with just 30 seconds remaining ended up being the difference in the match. Kirk then beat Elijah Josey of Maryland and pinned Isael Perez of Rhode Island to make the finals. Again - Kirk had to come back to get the win … down 1-0 he earned a stall call to tie it at 1 after the 2nd period. In the 3rd he got a quick escape and then held off Jameson Maynard of West Virginia to claim the 182 lb. title.
Cason Howle - NHSCA Champ at 220. Howle entered this past weekend as a man on a mission and the top seed at 220. Howle had made the podium as a freshman, sophomore, and junior, but had yet to claim a title. He dominated from the beginning with 3 technical falls and a major decision win to make the finals opposite Patrick Donahue of Delaware. Donahue earned the first point with a quick escape to start the 2nd and held that lead into the 3rd when Howle earned an escape at 1:48. A takedown to win it and earn and NHSCA title … Howle was finally able to get it with under 30 seconds remaining … an escape by Donahue would cut the score to 4-2, but Howle would end up with the title.
